  • Click on Externalizer Profiles under Storage Optimization.
  • In the top left side of the page, you will see "Add a Storage Profile", click on it.

Defining Storage Profile Scope:

On the profile page, select a profile scope. It can either be a Web Application or a Content Database. For using Web Application user need to plug-in EBS provider, on other hand Content Database requires the RBS installation. For more details kindly visit : EBS/RBS Configuration

  • If you want to configure an Externalizer for a web application, select "Web Application" as shown below.

  • Select an already created web application from drop down list.

  • If you want to configure an Externalizer for a content database, select "Content Database" as shown below. User need to install RBS for the content database before creating a profile for it.

  • Select an already created content database from drop down list.

Scope Filtering:

Scope Filtering allows you to narrow down the scope of content for externalization. By default, content of all sites will be externalized but user can select sites or lists by expending the tree.

Adding a Storage Tiers:

Externalizer can have multi storage tiers to store BLOBs. Each tier in Externalizer must have a Storage Pool associated with it. From this section user can add a Storage Tier for Externalizer Storage Profile.

Configure Offload existing BLOB content Job:

Schedule a content Offload job if you want to move BLOBs from SharePoint database to Externalizer. "Offload Existing BLOBs Content" job is one time job which externalizes all the existing BLOBs in SharePoint to the external storage. This job only leaves the references in the database and move all the BLOB content to the external storage.

  • To schedule this job, users are supposed to enable the job and specify the Server, Date and Time for the job to run.
  • You can enable "Reschedule if terminated before completion" option to reschedule the offload job if it is not completed properly. To reschedule the job you need to set the interval for that job.
  • "Enable job throttling" option will apply the already configured throttling settings for this job.
  • "Edit Settings" will jump you to the Job Throttling page, where you can reconfigure the speed for this job.

Note: In case, filtering policies are specified for the content, the content will remain on database only when no tier in Externalizer profile accepted the content.

Configuring Clean Garbage Job:

At this point you can also optionally schedule the Clean Garbage BLOBs job. It’s a recursive job and garbage will not be removed until it is 5 minutes old. You just need to schedule it once for a single profile. You need to run the Clean Garbage BLOBs job for a couple of reasons:

  • When BLOBs are deleted from SharePoint's Administrative Recycle Bin, these BLOBs become garbage. In order to remove the garbage BLOBs, you need to run this job.
  • Whenever a file in SharePoint is updated, the older one does not get deleted, it becomes garbage and unnecessarily consumes the storage space on your Storage Profile. To remove the older files, the Clean Garbage BLOBs job can be used.
  • To schedule this job, users are supposed to enable the job and specify the server and time for the job to run.
  • "Enable job throttling" option will apply the already configured throttling settings for this job.
  • "Edit Settings" will jump you to the Job Throttling page, where you can reconfigure the speed for this job.
