Unable to Connect Server Node in Windows 7/XP

The "Unable to Connect Server Node" error typically occurs when remote monitoring is not enabled on the server nodes that are running the Windows XP or Windows 7 operating systems. To resolve this connectivity issue and enable remote counter visibility, administrators must configure specific Registry permissions, NTFS access rights, and Network Sharing settings to allow the NCache management service to communicate across the cluster. Use the following steps to enable remote monitoring:

WINDOWS XP

  • Open Windows Explorer on the target Windows XP computer.

  • Select Tools -> Folder Options.

  • Click the View tab.

  • Clear the Use Simple File Sharing check box, and click OK.

  • Verify privileges on the target Windows XP computer.

  • If the systemroot is on an NTFS partition, you must have at least READ access to the following two files:

    • %SystemRoot%\System32\Perfc009.dat
    • %SystemRoot%\System32\Perfh009.dat
  • You must have at least READ access to the following registry keys on the remote computer:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib
  • Reboot your Windows XP machine.

Note

A user that has administrator rights for the remote computer can also view remote counters.

WINDOWS 7

In Windows 7, if you are still unable to view counters of a remote server, then enable File, Folder, and Network Sharing options.

  • Go to Control Panel, select Network and Sharing center.

  • Click Change Advanced Sharing Settings.

  • Under the Network discovery option, select Turn on network discovery.

  • Under the File and printer sharing option, select Turn on file and printer sharing.

  • Under the Public folder sharing option, select Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in Public folders.

  • Click Save changes.
